Administrative and Clinical Medical Assistant/ Medical Receptionist

Job Description

 

Hours: M-F 9:00 to 5:00pm

Department: Jonathan Lax Center, Philadelphia FIGHT Community Health

Centers          

Supervisor: Practice Coordinator  

Full-Time, 40 hours per week; non-exempt

Philadelphia FIGHT is an AIDS Service Organization that recently became a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). We have been providing primary care for people living with HIV/AIDS and those at very high risk since 1990. Our program is a team-centered, multi-disciplinary approach that in addition to clinical care, offers access to behavioural health and substance abuse services, a wide range of educational programs, HIV counselling and testing, and youth programs. The Jonathan Lax Treatment Center, our first Health Center, provides culturally competent, non-judgmental, high quality health care to patients living with HIV.  In addition to health care, the Jonathan Lax Treatment Center connects patients with social services, resources, and insurance benefits. 

 

The ideal candidate will take a trauma-informed and harm-reduction approach to health care.

Job Responsibilities

 

. Phlebotomy (Primary Role)

  1. Pre-triage patients
    1. Determining the reason for the visit before nursing start visit
    2. Checking vital ( blood pressure, temperature, pulse oximetry, height, weight)
    3. Upon request from providers and nursing as indicated on tracking board and via verbal order, complete:
  • EKGs
  • Urine dips and pregnancy checks
  • Random blood glucose checks
  • Rapid A1c testing
  • Rapid urine drug screens
  1. Assist providers with preventive medicine with patient if requested or if time allows
  2. Provide basic wound care
  3. Upon request administer injections (Depoprovera, Bicillin, Ceftriaxone, Vivitrol)
  4. Specimen delivery from 4th floor to 5th floor (end of morning session and end of afternoon session)
  5. Follow up for durable medical equipment (DME) orders/ delivery status
  6. Back up appointment scheduling
  7. Back up phlebotomy if needed with collection and processing
  8. End of day task
  1. Check and log temperature in refrigerator
  2. Restock wound care kit and nebulizer supplies
  3. Restock syringes, needles
  4. Organize medication room
  5. Monitor oxygen supply and EKG machine
  6. Does ekg machine have paper end electrodes?
  7. Restock emergency kits (Narcan, etc)
  1. Collect, remove and box biohazard waste materials bags for pick up
  2. Document all activities appropriately in the electronic medical record system
  3. Stock exam rooms.

 

Medical Reception (back up)

  1. Greet Patients and Visitors
  2. Answering/ Triaging phones calls
  3. Check in patient which includes
    1. Collecting paperwork
    2. Updating demographic information
    3. Verifying insurance
    4. Collecting payment
  4. Scheduling, changing, and cancelling patient appointments using electronic medical record
  5. Scanning of medical records in to the electronic medical record system.
  6. Managing a busy waiting room ensuring all patients are being processed appropriately.
  7. Manage patient flow including triaging walk-ins.
  8. Generation of referrals and prior authorizations to outside medical providers
  9. Confirm next day appointments
  10. Make calls to reschedule appointments when necessary

 

Function in a team

    1. Work in compliance with all medical policies.
    2. Work in compliance with standards such as OSHA, HIPAA, CLIA and funding body regulations
    3. Demonstrate commitment to clinical care and confidentiality
    4. Provide cross-coverage at other health centers on an as needed basis
    5. Work closely with nursing staff and medical assistants in completion of daily duties.
    6. Exercise good judgment in bringing any issues necessary to the attention of the Practice Coordinator.
  • Constantly strives to achieve excellence in the day-to-day operations of the Jonathan Lax Center

 

 

Qualifications

Educational Background: Diploma from an accredited medical assistant program. Certification 1.      Certified Medical Assistant

  • Within 30 days of hire, complete training in blood borne pathogens, post exposure prophylaxis, CLIA, and HIPAA regulations.

 

Knowledge

General knowledge base in science, medicine, and the running of a medical clinic. Demonstrate the ability to understand the overall purpose of clinical care and importance of support staff.  

General

Must be able to demonstrate judgment, patience, integrity, organization, and prioritization in multi-task environment. Needs to have attention to detail, dependability, listening and communication skills, and flexibility.  Must have cultural competency.  Needs to be competent in the use of Electronic Medical Record Systems.

Compensation

Competitive, benefits included. Non-exempt

 

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to continuously stand, walk or sit.
  • Ability to bend, climb stairs frequently.
  • Ability to lift up to 10 pounds infrequently.
  • Ability to squat occasionally.

 

Other

Initial probationary period is three months.

Performance of other tasks may be assigned on an as-needed basis.
