Philadelphia FIGHT Community Health Centers is seeking a passionate and motivated Medical Assistant to support us at our John Bell Health Center. The John Bell Health Center is a comprehensive medical clinic that provides primary health care to adults ages 18 and older. The John Bell Health Center was established to provide care to individuals living with chronic health conditions as a result of socio-economic factors including a history of incarceration. Our mission is to provide a safe space for people to access culturally competent health care regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay.
The ideal Medical Assistant will take a trauma-informed and harm-reduction approach to health care. The trauma-informed approach is guided by four assumptions: Realization about trauma and how it can affect people and groups, recognizing the signs of trauma, having a system which can respond to trauma, and resisting re-traumatization.
About the Role:
- Schedule: Full-time, Monday - Friday (9:00 - 5:00PM). May occasionally require early mornings or extended evening hours as needed.

- FSLA status is non-exempt with hourly rate of $23 per hour

Requirements:
- The Medical Assistant will have a High School Diploma or GED equivalent. A Certified Medical Assistant or Registered Medical Assistant is required.
- 2-3 years of experience in a medical outpatient office environment, and experience working with an electronic medical record system, preferably eClinicalWorks.
- Must be able to complete FIGHT's credentialing and privileging process pre-employment.
- Current CPR certification is required, or renewal must be obtained within 60 days of employment.
- Must be able to demonstrate judgement, patience, integrity, organization, and prioritization in a multi-task environment.
- Needs to have attention to detail, dependability, listening and communication skills, and flexibility.
- Must have cultural competency.
Responsibilities include:
Clinical Tasks
- Escort patients back to the exam room and collect vital health information (i.e., chief complaint, blood pressure, heart rate, height/weight, vision/hearing screens, etc.).
- Perform phlebotomy with specimen collection and processing. Coordinate care for patients needing lab visits and at off-site labs.
- Administer injections and vaccinations in compliance with vaccine administration policies and procedures. Complete vaccine abstraction on all patients needing updated vaccine records in the Electronic Medical Record.
- Perform point of care tests, such as Rapid HIV tests, strep tests, glucose measurement, urine dipstick, etc. and participate in running controls in compliance with CLIA regulations at FIGHT.
- Document all activities related to patient care appropriately and in a timeframe set forth by policy in the Electronic Medical Record.
- Meticulously comply with all rules and regulations from the Vaccine for Children (VFC) and Vaccines for Adults at Risk (VFAAR) programs, including weekly vaccine counts and monthly vaccine ordering. This also includes daily temperature monitoring of storage units with attention to risk for temperature excursions.
- Assist provider as a chaperone with any exam room procedures (ie, Nexplanon placement, pap smears).
- Maintain exam room cleanliness and safety at the beginning and end of each clinic day, and between visits.
- Monitor medical supply stock in both the exam rooms and in the supply closets and coordinate monthly supply order with Nurse Manager.
- Remove biohazard waste materials according to schedule.
- Maintain working relationship with consultants, including Stericycle and LabCorp to ensure proper waste disposal and phlebotomy/specimen collection and supply stock.
- Checking vital (blood pressure, temperature, pulse oximetry, height, weight)
- Upon request from providers and nursing, complete such tasks / procedures as but not a comprehensive list.

- Random blood glucose checks
- Rapid A1C testing
- Rapid urine drug screens
- Femoral sticks
- Nebulizers, IUD, abscess drainage, durable medical equipment, etc.
Other Duties
- Participate in all required staff meetings (monthly), daily huddles before clinic session starts, professional development meetings (supervision and MA skill share), and team meetings with administration staff (monthly).
- Promote collaborative and supportive work environment using professional and respectful communication with all team members. Utilize Nurse Manager and Medical Director for any conflict management needed to address and resolve work tensions related to interpersonal dynamics and patient care.
- Work in compliance with all medical policies.
- Work in compliance with standards such as VFC, OSHA, HIPAA, CLIA and funding body regulations.
- Demonstrate commitment to clinical care and confidentiality.
- Contribute to quality improvement (QI) processes and performance measure projects as needed to meet grant requirements.
- Demonstrate initiative toward independent and collaborative role in clinic. Utilize problem- solving skills to improve quality of work and patient care.
