Pharmacy Technician Job Description


The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for supporting pharmacy-related activities within FIGHT Community Health Centers alongside the Clinical Pharmacist. The Pharmacy Technician's key role is to ensure patients have access to their medications by forwarding refill requests to providers, obtaining prior authorizations through insurance plans, communicating with dispensing pharmacies to problem-solve, enrolling patients in copay assistance, coordinating delivery of office-administered medications, and working together with health center staff to address other issues that may arise.


Qualifications: The Pharmacy Technician will have their High School Diploma or equivalent, and a minimum of 3 years of professional work experience as a Pharmacy Technician.


Responsibilities include:

  • Receive all incoming medication-related communication (faxes, phone calls, voicemails, electronic messages, etc.) and address or forward to appropriate staff member.
  • Inform providers of all appropriate refill requests and provider-specific requests.
  • Refer all drug information and clinical questions to the providers.
  • Process all prior authorization requests in a timely manner and communicate with providers, pharmacies, and patients regarding status.
  • Inform providers of formulary alternatives (if info is provided by the patient's insurance) for medications not covered by patients' insurance.
  • Make necessary calls to pharmacies or insurance companies to help address any issues with medication access.
  • Work together with medical case managers, nurses, providers, and all other appropriate clinical staff to problem-solve when necessary.
  • Set up delivery of medications from the appropriate pharmacy for patients receiving office-administered medications.
  • Assist patients when they report lost or stolen medications.
  • Assist patients with co-pay assistance cards.
  • Assist supervisor in medication inventory management.
  • Maintain pharmacy services in accordance with departmental standards as well as governmental laws and regulations.
  • Identify, report, and act as appropriate on medication safety related risks and incidents.
  • Maintain awareness of current regulations, trends, and issues pertaining to the 340B program.

Other duties:

  • Assisting in annual 340B third party audits.
  • Participating in all HRSA 340B related audits.
  • Participating in quarterly 340B Governance Committee meetings.
  • Monitoring and staying in compliance with 340B Annual Calendar.
  • Attending regular meetings with 340B contract pharmacies.
  • Assist with the development of knowledge and maintain awareness of current regulations, trends, and issues pertaining to the 340B program.

Other: Initial probationary period is three months. Performance of other tasks may be assigned on an as-needed basis.

Salary range: Competitive; Hourly

Travel Requirements: Minimal local travel required between Philadelphia FIGHT Health Centers.

Work Hours: 40 Hours/Week (M-F 9:00am - 5:00pm)
